DEVILMAN
I remember i saw this guy on a store when i was, probablly, 12 years old. He looked fascinating and it germinated the interest on Devilman on me. The Devilman toyline by Fewture was actually pretty amazing back in its time. The amount of detail and size dwarfed all other toy lines from back then (Kenner, Sideshows, Hasbro, Kaiyodo…) and stood pretty solid against its only competitor quality wise: McFarlane Toys.
Designed by the now late and talented horror artist, Yasushi Nirasawa, this where not only horror figures (pretty rare back then) but they were designer figures as well.
The very first on the collection was Devilman himself, standing really tall - ike a Play Arts Kai - he was pretty close to Go Nagai design, Nirasawa was pretty shy with him and didnt change a whole lot on him and keep every aspect close to the manga: the furry legs, the small wings on his head, the scars on his chest…
The original version had a bluish tone on his skin but it looked kinda dull for me, soo i had the chance to pick the “Tribal” version painted in a bright hellish red with tribal tattos on his abs, back and shoulders.
The other difference with the original release is the base since he comes with a big coin base that was used on the second series, with his name on the center written in demonic language. This version was actually a sort of teaser to the second series i think.
Articulations are extremelly basic, and is here were time really shows: he have a cut neck and shoulders and elbows and thats it, just the basic movement action figures had back in the 90s and that dont make him pretty dynamic at all. Hes more like an static statue.
Time also shows on the way he stands, since he is pretty tall and heavy and his legs are soo long, his feet cant support him and he falls to the front. To fix him i post some black paper under the front of his feet and all is fixed tough he cant stand outside his base.
I dont regret getting this “Tribal” version at all, i love the bright red skin and how demonic he looks and the tribal tattos are really sexy. Actually, this is the sexyest and most hunky Devilman of the Fewture series since he is the one with the more human body structure: his arms have the perfect size as well as his muscly legs and his big back, he is fit and muscly but pretty aesthetic to be fast and have an erotic manly silhouette.
His ass is pretty meaty as well as hig bulgue actually…. back then when i was 14 years old this quiet a revelation for me.
Even soo, i have to say this is one of the most boring figures of the whole line. A very basic character and a really cool design to display, but the other characters outshined him pretty fast being much more grotesque and bizarre looking.
